I sat glued to my television screen as the Constitutional Court ruling has just been issued on the right for South African Expats to vote.

I am so excited that Registered South African Expats will be allowed to take part in our April Elections!  Those who are registered voters, before leaving South Africa, need to notify the IEC of their intentions to vote as expats by the 27th March 2009.

It was exciting to see our South African Constitution work for the future democracy of our country!  I hope all Registered Expat Voters will take this opportunity and vote in South Africa’s General Elections this year!

Fifteen days and counting!

I’m also slowly starting to get excited about the elections. Instead of counting down the World Cup (457 days to go or something) they should count down the election. I’m pretty disillusioned with our politicians but it will be great to see SA democracy in action. And I hope get a holiday too.

  2. Wow that’s a big step to help people abroad feel more connected with home.

Pete: I go from being disillusioned to out right fury when it comes to the antics of our politicians but as they say every vote counts and I hope that each eligible South African voter will make their mark on April 22!

HPH: It is a big step. Expats were allowed to vote in our landmark, first free and fair General Elections in 1994 after which our then Government changed it’s laws to only include South Africans currently residing in South Africa at the time of the elections. This discounted many voters in the elections that followed. So I see it as a vote of confidence in our constitution that Expats be allowed to vote from now on!
