I’m a bit hungry for some Lebkuchen, Stollen and Zimt Sterne now myself! I will be eternally impressed if you learn how to make those yourself though. I was just looking at the rather dreary mince pies in P n P the other day and thinking “there must be something better than this, surely?”

Thanks for posting on this. We had a little ceremony at the military base and I got to read a citation for World Aids Day. The phrase that stays with me is “Today we remember them”. I found it very poignant to try and think of all those who have lost their lives to this disease and to remember that this is why we need to be more active in helping those affected and infected.

Unicef is very active supporting children who are AIDs victims: http://www.unicef.org/aids/index_introduction.php. We donated toward this and other charities for Christmas gifts last year.

Lovely name but am a bit horrified that each kid got a goldfish! Staggering. What’s next? A chicken, a rabbit, a kitten? Sterkte for the party season. Makes me feel OK about being childless

What were they thinking! Very cute and clever, but perhaps they could have provide it with a tank and some fish food as well, so that parents didn’t have to give up their salad bowls.

We have treasure hunts and the treasure takes the place of the party pack, so the kids have usually eaten the chocolate coins and at least one of them has lost the rest of the treasure before the end of the party…

That’s extreme, and one end of the spectrum of sending each child home with a puppy, or perhaps a nice little orphan.

Whenever I hear tales of kids’ birthdays in other countries, I am deeply relieved that I live in Germany where birthdays are still in the realm of normal and not some effort by the parents to compete with each other.

Oh you poor thing, I really feel for you! We have also been through the flu thing – I had hubby and both girls in bed, booked off work and school respectively for a week…. I nearly went mad. 2 weeks later when I was STILL gloating about my superior immune system it struck me down too. But, thankfully, we are all well and raring to go again – long may it continue!
